Radar is normally preferred when vapor, foam, dust, pressure, temperature variation or a long measuring range makes ultrasonic echo reliability uncertain. 80 GHz radar also helps when a narrow beam is needed to avoid nozzles, ladders or internal structures.
Ultrasonic level meters remain economical for open tanks, sumps, clean water, wastewater and many chemical storage applications when the surface is relatively stable and the blind zone can be respected.
