Level switches provide a high or low alarm point instead of a continuous level value. They are used for overflow prevention, dry-run pump protection, low-level shutdown, high-high alarms and demand level detection in tanks or silos.
The switch principle should follow the medium. Float switches suit many clean liquids when the float can move freely. Cable float switches are common in sumps. Tuning fork switches can handle liquids or powders by model. Rotary paddle and vibrating rod switches are mainly used for dry solids. RF admittance can help with sticky or coating media when configured correctly.
Conductive switches only work with conductive liquids and should not be selected for oil, solvents or non-conductive chemicals. External ultrasonic or non-contact capacitive switches need tank-wall and installation review; they are not universal replacements for an inserted switch.
Fail-safe logic matters. Confirm whether the PLC or relay expects normally open, normally closed, PNP, NPN, NAMUR, two-wire or dry contact output, and whether the alarm should be triggered on power loss, probe fault or only on material contact.
For RFQ, send medium, density or bulk density, particle size, dielectric if known, buildup risk, alarm height, mounting orientation, process connection, power supply, output logic, contact rating, material requirement and hazardous-area requirement.
