Selection guide· 03

How to specify ultrasonic level meters.

Ultrasonic level meters are economical non-contact instruments for water tanks, sumps, open channels and many chemical storage tanks. They measure distance by sound time-of-flight, so the air space between sensor and liquid matters.

Before selection, confirm blind zone, tank height, maximum fill level, vapor, foam, turbulence, temperature variation and whether the mounting nozzle gives the sensor a clear path. A wrong blind-zone estimate is one of the most common ultrasonic selection mistakes.

Integrated ultrasonic transmitters are simple for tank-top installation. Split ultrasonic meters help when the display or relays must be mounted at a panel. Open-channel ultrasonic systems need the correct flume, weir or flow table rather than a generic tank-level setup.

Corrosion-resistant ultrasonic sensors use compatible faces or housings, but heavy vapor and condensation can still be a problem. Explosion-proof versions must be matched to the site area classification and certificate requirement.

For RFQ, send tank height, maximum level, sensor mounting position, medium, vapor/foam condition, output, power, relay points and whether the display must be local or remote.

FAQ· 05

Ultrasonic Level Meters questions.

It is the minimum distance below the sensor where measurement is not reliable. The exact value depends on sensor range and model.

Light foam may be possible, but dense foam can absorb sound. Radar is usually safer for heavy foam.

Ultrasonic is normally used at atmospheric or low-pressure conditions. Pressure, vapor and temperature changes should be reviewed carefully.

Choose split type when the sensor is on the tank but the display, relays or wiring point must be remote.

Send flume/weir type, dimensions, maximum flow, sensor mounting height, power and output requirements.
